Top 5 Defending Tips that you can implement to instantly improve your defending and win rate in EA FC 27
FC 27 makes defending a bit more challenging because there’s been changes to how AI defense works and also nerfed teammate contain. Defending has become abundantly more difficult in FC 27. In this guide, we’re going to go through some of my top five tips that can help you defend better in FC 27 and improve your win rate. These are quick tips that can help you instantly improve if you implement them inside the game.
If you really want to improve your defending, one of the key tips this year is you need to be able to switch to your defenders early before a pass has been made. Reacting to your opponent and switching early is so imperative because defensive AI has been nerfed, so you have to take up positions yourself early. The key is switching early.
This is probably the most game changing advice I can give you, and the sooner you start to switch early, the better you will be able to anticipate danger.
For example, if you anticipate a lobbed through ball coming over the top, switch to your defender early, What a lot of people are doing is they’re switching to their defensive line after the pass has been made, not before. This is the difference between someone making a stop in the attack and your opponent scoring. You need to switch early. Whether you’re using right stick switching or if you’re using L1 switching, you have to switch early, anticipate the danger. Have a look at some of my videos on my YouTube channel where we go with this in a bit more detail, but the key is switching early.
You can still use your CDM like last year to defend, but the difference is that when the ball gets past your midfielders, you have to switch to your defensive line and defend, There’s no auto-tackling, remember. So if the ball does get past your CDMs, you could be in trouble if you don’t switch. Your defenders will just stand there.
The key to defending is recognising danger before it happens, rather than reacting when it’s too late.
I’m going to be direct: 78 sprint speed is the minimum I would recommend for your defenders, but ideally, you should be looking at 85 or above. Yes, yes I know that mean only a few defenders in the game.
I know what you’re going to say “why should I”, There aren’t many defenders with that kind of pace, but it doesn’t matter. We know how dangerous lobbed through balls are in FC 27, and you need defenders who can recover.
There are some cheaper options, such as Oumar Solet and Mario Gila. If you have more coins, you can look at Abdukodir Khusanov or Maxence Lacroix. Id rather you use Solet that cost 4k with a shadow than some of these cards that cost 100k+ like VVD with 73 sprint speed.
If you’re an Elite Division or Rank 1 player, you can potentially get away with slower defenders because your positioning is better, hence why VVD may be more viable.
However, for the average player, pace is essential. If you don’t switch early enough, as I mentioned in the first tip, having a quick defender gives you another opportunity to recover. Go with Jockey Playstyle if you can if you struggle to defend in 1v1s.
What you ultimately need to remember is the faster your defender is, the quicker you can recover. If your opponent runs past you or you make a mistake, the faster your player is, you can run back and recover. That is the most important thing. And for example, if in tip one you’re not switching early in time, at least if you’re delayed in your switching, you have the pace to come back and recover the situation. So let’s say, for example, the ball is in midfield, your centre defensive midfielders get beaten, you can at least have some time to run back and recover.
Advanced Defending is a great feature if you’re a top-tier player. If you’re a professional or Rank 1 player, by all means, use it.
However, Advanced Defending has been nerfed this year. Bruiser is still effective, but you can’t perform the same shoulder-to-shoulder challenges that you could last year. With off-balance dribbling also being introduced in FC 27 means that the advanced defending isn’t as powerful as it was last year.
The problem is that Advanced Defending makes things unnecessarily complicated for the average player.
You can still reach Elite Division and Rank 1 using Tactical Defending. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it.
My recommendation is to keep things simple. Use Tactical Defending and let the game decide which type of challenge to perform. Unfortunately, from my analysis over the years, the “average defender” they defend differently with advanced defending. Instead of going to where the ball is going to be, they try to cut the player out, and ultimately that’s where they lose the defensive action. Its not they don’t know how to use, its that they know how to mechanically do it, but not when to implement it correctly and when to correct their run to run in front.
There is a lot of things in EA Sports FC 27 that the AI gets terribly wrong, but I’ll be honest, tactical defending is one of the things which AI does the right thing and chooses the right animations and the right tackle type to use. Unless you are a top-tier player and you know exactly when to use it, I wouldn’t recommend using it. Even if you do know how to use it, you need to make sure you understand that this doesn’t affect your defending, because a lot of people, especially people in the lower divisions, they may know how to mechanically use advanced defending, but it alters the way they defend. They may try to shoulder-to-shoulder tackle their opponent as opposed to defending the angle towards goal or running to where the ball is going to be.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is trying to win the ball back as quickly as possible.
Instead, your main objective should be to defend the angle towards goal.
Think about it this way: if your opponent is going to take a shot, you want them shooting from a difficult angle.
Don’t rush out with your centre-backs or step forward aggressively unless you’re confident you’re going to win the ball. Against a good player, one through ball in behind can completely expose your defence.
Keep your defenders in line, hold your position and let the opponent come towards you. Then Tackle when its the right time, don’t spam the button and commit a tackle otherwise its game over. If you’re using a CDM to run back, run back in a direct line in front of your opponent. Don’t try to push them off the ball, and that’s why I meant earlier don’t use advanced defending, because it changes your mentality when you’re defending. You can see, for example, in the below example with Schweinsteiger, I’m running back and I’m defending by being in front of my opponent without committing my Defenders.
If you’re defending a one-on-one, don’t panic. Show the attacker towards the outside and force them into a difficult shooting position. Also, be careful when moving your goalkeeper towards the far post. Near-post finishes are a viable option in FC 27, so don’t leave that angle exposed.
One of the best ways to improve your defence is using the correct players. I want to give you two players that are really easy to get and quite affordable after you play the game for some time.
These are two defenders that I would recommend.
Bonus tip: that you can earn Lacroix in the season pass by getting 7,000 points. You can earn the one to watch variation which upgrades over time if they card gets any upgrades or informs. But these are two fast defenders that have the jockey play style. They’ve also got very good sprint speed and good defensive awareness. This would be the go-to defenders that I would recommend. So if you’re wondering right now, I need defensive players that can make a big difference, these are the players that I would ultimately suggest that immediately fit into your team and make a big difference.
| Player | OVR | PAC | SHO | PAS | DRI | DEF | PHY | Club |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abdukodir Khusanov | 82 | 88 | 39 | 64 | 68 | 83 | 80 | Man City |
| Maxence Lacroix | 82 | 86 | 45 | 61 | 67 | 83 | 82 | Chelsea |
| Oumar Solet | 78 | 84 | 43 | 62 | 68 | 77 | 81 | Udinese |
Teammate contain has been significantly nerfed this year, particularly in the defensive phase.
I don’t necessarily mind that change defensively I am actually in favour of it, although I think teammate contain should work more like last year when pressing in the opposition’s half as its too easy to keep the ball, but that’s a discussion for another day.
The problem is that teammate contain is now much riskier to use.
Last year, you could get away with using teammate contain while controlling another defender. This year, the second defender maintains more distance from the attacker, meaning you need to switch and defend manually much more often.
What I’m seeing is people using teammate contain with their main defender, which leaves them vulnerable.
Instead, you can use teammate contain with your CDM to apply pressure while manually controlling your main defensive player.
If you’re unsure how to use teammate contain effectively, my advice is to stop using it initially.
Focus on maintaining your defensive line, let your opponent come towards you, and gradually introduce teammate contain once you’re comfortable defending manually.
See the example below where you can see the main defender I’m controlling inside the box and I’m man marking the striker myself, but the player that’s applying teammate contain, has a green triangle above their head is my other midfielder who sits higher. The mistake here what people do is they use the opposite. They control the player manually and use teammate contain with the defender, and thus they create a massive gap in their defence. The key is to use teammate contain, and if there is a good chance for you win the ball, then you switch the player that you’re using teammate contain with, and then you try to get the ball. But remember, teammate contain, they don’t apply anywhere near as far as they would last year, and they have removed auto tackling from the game.
The most important thing is to stay in control of your defenders rather than relying on the AI to win the ball for you. React early, switch early, move your player in position and react. Use teammate contain to help you as a tool – if ofc you know how to use it – otherwise it would only make your defenders run out.

Common Defending Questions in FC 27
Defending is harder in FC 27 because the game has reduced defensive AI effectiveness. Not only that, they don’t stay in position as much as they would last year, but there’s also nerfs to auto-tackling. These things collectively together is what ultimately makes defending a bit more manual.
78 sprint speed is the minimum to aim for, and 85 or more is ideal. Lobbed through balls are very dangerous in FC 27, so you need defenders who can recover quickly. Cheaper options include Oumar Solet and Mario Gila, and Abdukodir Khusanov and Maxence Lacroix suit bigger budgets.
Most players should use Tactical Defending. Advanced Defending has been nerfed this year and is more complicated to use whereas the rewards are much lower than last year, and it’s easy to mistime. Tactical Defending lets the game choose the type of challenge, and you can still reach Elite Division and Rank 1 with no issues.
Anticipate the ball before it’s played and switch to your defender early. Don’t wait until the pass is already over the top, because by then it’s too late. Fast defenders also give you a second chance to recover if you switch a little late.
